CAN 2025: Senegalese Supporters Granted Royal Pardon by Morocco's King Return Home

Supporters Freed After CAN 2025 Violence Return to Senegal

In a heartwarming turn of events, Senegalese supporters who were imprisoned following violent incidents during the CAN 2025 final in Rabat have returned to their homeland. This joyous homecoming occurred early Sunday morning after they were granted clemency by King Mohammed VI of Morocco on Saturday, citing "humanitarian considerations." This gesture is particularly significant given the longstanding fraternal ties between Morocco and Senegal.

The royal statement emphasized the importance of these relations, especially with the celebration of Eid al-Adha upcoming in Morocco. It noted that the king's decision to extend his royal pardon was made out of compassion and to reinforce the friendship between the two nations. The unfortunate events unfolded on January 18 during the CAN final, where Senegal triumphed with a narrow 1-0 victory amidst chaos. The match saw tensions flare when a penalty was awarded to Morocco in the dying moments, leading to a flurry of protests from players and fans alike.

As a result of the incidents, 18 Senegalese were sentenced to prison terms ranging from three months to a year for charges including hooliganism and violence against law enforcement. Following a lengthy detention period, three supporters were released in mid-April after serving their sentences, while the remaining fifteen awaited the king's mercy. The announcement of the pardon was met with relief and gratitude, underscoring the deep bond of friendship and cooperation that exists between Senegal and Morocco.

Upon their arrival at Blaise Diagne Airport in Dakar, the supporters were warmly welcomed by Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who expressed his happiness in seeing them return to their homeland. The president, clad in sports attire, proudly reiterated Senegal's status as "the champions of Africa" while acknowledging the ongoing dispute regarding the title in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

In his remarks, President Faye also extended his thanks to Moroccan authorities for the royal clemency, specifically in light of the forthcoming Tabaski festival. Patrice Motsepe, President of the African Football Confederation (CAF), praised the king's decision as a profound example of football's ability to unify and connect people across Africa and beyond. The legal proceedings against the supporters were primarily based on footage from the Moulay-Abdellah Stadium, as well as medical reports from injured security personnel.

Relations between Senegal and Morocco have historically been strong, with both nations sharing deep cultural, religious, and social bonds. This incident tested their friendship, yet the recent royal pardon marks a hopeful reconciliation. Senegalese nationals represent the largest foreign community in Morocco, highlighting the interconnectedness of the two countries. As reported by courrierinternational.com.
