International Conference on Waste, Energy & Food Nexus Kicks Off in Agadir

Exploring Sustainable Innovations at NWEFA 2026

The international conference on the Nexus of Waste, Energy & Food in Morocco (Nexus Waste, Energy & Food-NWEFA 2026) commenced on Tuesday in Agadir, presenting a significant opportunity for academics, industry experts, and policymakers to converge on critical issues affecting sustainability. Under the theme "Innovations, Challenges, and Sustainable Perspectives," this gathering, organized by the Microbial Biotechnology and Plant Protection Laboratory at Ibn Zohr University’s Faculty of Sciences, aims to serve as a scientific and academic platform aligned with Morocco's strategic directions in circular economy, energy transition, and climate change mitigation.

According to the organizers, the primary goal of NWEFA 2026 is to highlight integrated and innovative approaches that link waste management with sustainable energy production and food security. This two-day event bridges the gap between scientific research and the industrial and economic realities, in accordance with the High Royal Vision aimed at promoting sustainable development, as well as ensuring energy and food sovereignty for the Kingdom.

Fostering Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange

In a statement to MAP, Ouahid El Asri, a professor at the Faculty of Sciences in Agadir and the main coordinator of the conference, emphasized that this meeting represents a unique opportunity for the exchange of expertise and the development of strategic partnerships among a diverse group of participants, including academic researchers, international experts, industry stakeholders, policymakers, innovative project leaders, and representatives from public and private institutions.

The conference will feature a series of scientific talks, practical workshops, and interactive discussion panels that will bring together economic and academic actors. The discussions will cover several key topics, including "Waste Management and Valorization: Biogas Production Technologies and Renewable Energy Solutions Development," "Circular Economy and Sustainable Agriculture: Mechanisms to Enhance Food Security and Address Environmental Stress," and "Green Technologies: Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Solutions for Environmental Sustainability and Development." This collaborative effort aims to foster innovative solutions that can effectively tackle the pressing challenges of waste management, energy production, and food security in the face of ongoing environmental changes.
