The Marrakech Platform: A Crucial Gathering for African Counterterrorism Efforts
The fifth high-level meeting of African counterterrorism and security agency leaders, known as the "Marrakech Platform," commenced on Tuesday in El Jadida, co-chaired by Morocco and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT). This significant assembly brings together African officials and international partners to address the pressing security issues confronting the continent. Over the course of two days, nearly forty African intelligence and security services are participating in discussions aimed at strengthening cooperative measures against evolving threats.
Expanding International Participation
This assembly not only features representatives from various African nations but also includes around ninety delegations from the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, attending as observers. The participation of numerous regional institutions and UN agencies underscores the global commitment to bolstering international cooperation in response to security challenges that transcend national borders. The discussions are particularly relevant today, as participants confront the persistent threat posed by extremist groups and evolving terrorist tactics within Africa. Key topics include enhancing coordination, information sharing, and operational capabilities among member states.
As the fifth iteration of this initiative follows previous meetings held in Marrakech in 2022, Tangier in 2023, Fez in 2024, and Agadir in 2025, the Marrakech Platform has steadily established itself as a vital forum for exchanging expertise, developing security partnerships, and identifying common priorities in the fight against terrorism across Africa.
