Prolonged Heatwave Affects Most Regions in Morocco
On May 24, 2023, the National Meteorological Directorate of Morocco issued an orange alert across the majority of the country due to forecasts predicting a continued heatwave, with temperatures soaring to as high as 45 degrees Celsius. This alarming rise in temperature is expected to persist until Wednesday, underscoring the severity of the weather conditions affecting the region.
The meteorological agency detailed that several areas in the north, central, and southern regions of Morocco, including cities like Larache, Uezan, Fez, Kenitra, Beni Melal, Essaouira, Marrakech, Tarfaya, Tan-Tan, as well as Esmara and El Aaiún in Western Sahara, will experience extreme heat. Additionally, the capital city, Rabat, along with its neighboring city Salé, is forecasted to reach highs of up to 42 degrees Celsius, while coastal cities such as Casablanca, Mohamedia, and Sidi Ifni may see temperatures ranging between 38 and 41 degrees Celsius.
Health Recommendations Amidst Rising Temperatures
In light of these soaring temperatures, the Moroccan meteorological authority has issued several recommendations to ensure public safety. Citizens are advised to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours when the heat is at its most intense. Special attention is urged for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic health conditions. Furthermore, it is recommended to refrain from engaging in strenuous physical activities under the midday sun, which could exacerbate health risks during such extreme weather conditions.
The rise in temperatures first began last Wednesday, with various regions already reporting highs of up to 42 degrees. As this heatwave continues, residents are encouraged to take precautions to protect themselves and stay safe during this challenging weather period.
