Basketball Africa League Playoffs Kick Off in Kigali with RSSB Tigers' Strong Victory

The Exciting Return of the Basketball Africa League to Kigali

The Basketball Africa League (BAL) has made its much-anticipated return to Kigali, Rwanda, as the playoffs officially commenced on May 22, 2026. This season's playoffs feature eight of Africa's top basketball teams competing fiercely for the coveted continental title. In an electrifying opening match held at the BK Arena, the home team, RSSB Tigers, showcased their prowess by decisively defeating Morocco's FUS de Rabat with a score of 95 to 72, setting a thrilling tone for the playoffs.

For a few days, Kigali is once again at the heart of African basketball. Following successful conferences held in Morocco and South Africa, the BAL playoffs bring together the continent's elite teams in a critical final phase of the competition. Over the years, the league has garnered increasing visibility, expanding its reach far beyond Africa's borders.

Rising Popularity and Cultural Integration of the BAL

“We have just concluded our conferences in Morocco and South Africa with remarkable success, attracting nearly 70,000 fans across the two countries, and ticket sales have doubled. The BAL continues to expand, reaching fans in over 200 countries and territories and experiencing an astonishing annual audience growth of 1,000%. This unique sports property on the continent has also attracted a record number of 20 marketing partners. Beyond the competitions, the BAL celebrates the fusion of basketball with African culture, showcasing music, fashion, lifestyle, and entertainment,” said Clare Akamanzi, General Manager of NBA Africa – Rwanda.

During the opening ceremony of the playoffs, the RSSB Tigers launched their campaign with impressive vigor. Despite facing a challenge in the second quarter, the Rwandan team regained their intensity and offensive aggressiveness after halftime, which ultimately made the difference in the match. Coach Henry Mwinuka reflected on the game, stating, “We experienced a serious lapse during the second quarter. After leading by 15 points at the end of the first quarter, we mistakenly thought victory was in the bag. It's a mistake that can happen. At halftime, the team regrouped with a simple mantra: ‘Get back to our game, be more physical, and score closely.’ I am extremely grateful to the players, as it was only through their efforts, especially in the third quarter, that we managed to win this match. Now, we must focus on the next one. Even though we won by more than 20 points, the upcoming match will be tough, and we must win as everything is still possible.”

These playoffs will follow a new format where teams will compete in a series of two games, with the winners of these matchups securing their spots in the semifinals. Beyond the sporting outcomes, the BAL confirms its ambition to serve as a true showcase of African culture and entertainment, intertwining sports, music, and the continent's abundant talent.
