Casablanca Stock Exchange Faces Declines Amidst Economic Turmoil

The Casablanca Stock Exchange concluded the week spanning from June 1 to June 5, 2026, on a negative note, with its primary index, the MASI, experiencing a downturn of 1.89% to settle at 18,519.03 points. This decline marks a concerning trend for investors as the market grapples with various economic challenges.

In particular, the MASI.20 index, which tracks the performance of the 20 most liquid companies, fell by 1.61% to 1,320.34 points. Additionally, the MASI.ESG index, which represents companies with the best environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings according to Moody’s ESG Solutions, witnessed a significant drop of 2.8%, landing at 1,354 points. The MASI Mid and Small Cap index, which reflects the performance of small and medium-sized listed companies, also recorded a decline of 1.78%, closing at 1,869.94 points.

When examining sector performance, the most substantial losses were seen in the Engineering and Industrial Equipment (-7.43%), Electricity (-4.92%), and Mining sectors (-4.92%). In sharp contrast, the sectors showing resilience and growth included Beverages (+3.28%), Leisure and Hotels (+0.9%), and Pharmaceuticals (+0.74%).

Trading volume exceeded 1.26 billion dirhams, primarily concentrated in the central equity market, with significant transactions involving companies such as Minière Touissit (17.64%), Managem (13.68%), and Holcim Morocco (7.57%). The overall market capitalization stood at over 1,076.4 billion dirhams.

On an individual stock level, the most significant declines were observed in Cartier Saada (-8.99% to 28.16 DH), Stroc Industrie (-8.78% to 187 DH), Sonasid (-7.58% to 1,950 DH), SMI (-6.72% to 8,600 DH), and S2M (-6.37% to 529 DH). Conversely, notable gains were recorded by AGMA (+4.64% to 7,220 DH), Oulmès (+4.49% to 1,279 DH), Microdata (+4.4% to 783 DH), Société des Boissons du Maroc (+2.94% to 2,347 DH), and Zellidja (+2.43% to 215 DH).
