Celebrating Tradition: The 25th Edition of the Hassan II Traditional Equestrian Arts Award

On Sunday, the team led by Mouqaddim Tlahouni Mohammed Amin from the Casablanca-Settat region triumphed at the 25th edition of the Hassan II Traditional Equestrian Arts Award, also known as "Tbourida," during the Moroccan Championship for the senior category held from June 15 to 21 in Dar Assalam, Rabat. This prestigious event was organized under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, highlighting the cultural significance and competitive spirit of traditional equestrian arts in Morocco.

The winning team outperformed the team led by Mouqaddim Haloua Abd El Hadi from the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra region, which secured the silver medal, and the team headed by Mouqaddim Anjar Mehdi from the Marrakech-Asfi region, who took home the bronze medal. The competition reflected not only the skill of the riders but also the dedication to preserving this traditional Moroccan practice.

In the youth category, the title was awarded to the team from Casablanca-Settat, under the leadership of Mouqaddim Zrizik Badr from Madiouna. They were followed closely by the team from Marrakech-Asfi, led by Mouqaddim Khadi Badr Eddine from Youssoufia, while the team from Guelmim Oued Noun, with Mouqaddim Kazoumi Hossam from Guelmim, claimed the third position. This division saw six teams representing various regions, showcasing the widespread interest and talent among younger riders, ages 12 to 16.

The first round of this remarkable event witnessed the participation of 18 senior teams competing over four days, from which ten teams advanced to the finals. The competition format emphasized not only individual talent but also teamwork, as the participants demonstrated their precision in collective movements, discipline, and the synchronization of their actions. Judges from the Royal Moroccan Equestrian Federation evaluated performances based on criteria such as horse control, rider posture, and overall presentation.

The financial rewards for the senior category were substantial, with the national champion receiving a prize of 500,000 dirhams, followed by 300,000 dirhams for the runner-up and 200,000 dirhams for the bronze medalist. Participants who placed fourth to tenth also received monetary awards, ensuring that all competitors were recognized for their efforts. However, there were remarks about the need for increased prize values to further encourage participation and appreciation for this cultural heritage.

As we reflect on this vibrant event, it is clear that while the atmosphere was festive, logistical challenges such as inadequate parking facilities were noted, indicating areas for improvement in future editions. The need for organized parking options during significant events like Tbourida underscores the growing popularity of traditional equestrian arts in Morocco. The Hassan II Award continues to be a vital platform for celebrating and promoting this rich cultural tradition.
