Court Acquits Former Marrakech Region President of Corruption Charges

The Court of Appeal in Marrakech delivered a verdict on Friday declaring Abdelali Doumo, the former president of the Marrakech-Tensift-Al Haouz region, not guilty of charges related to embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds, as well as the intentional destruction of a public document and forgery of an official record.

The criminal court, in a public and preliminary session, stated that the defendant would not be held accountable for the accusations against him, ruling in favor of his acquittal while imposing costs on the public treasury.

This criminal case, registered under number 2022/2623/16, was filed in the preliminary criminal court specializing in financial crimes at the Marrakech Court of Appeal. It was initiated following an investigation by the public prosecutor's office based on a complaint submitted by the regional branch of the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Public Funds.

According to information obtained by Hespress, the reopening of Doumo's case, which involved accusations of misusing public funds during his tenure as president of the Marrakech-Tensift-Al Haouz regional council, aligns with a broader context of renewed scrutiny into various cases of corruption and mismanagement in several municipalities and regions across the kingdom.

Doumo faced prosecution following a complaint lodged against him by the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Public Funds in 2016, which accused him of squandering public money during his presidency by covering the accommodation expenses for personalities and families in luxury hotels, despite having no direct ties or services rendered to the region.
