French-Algerian Influencer Arrested in Morocco for Controversial Video

Details of the Arrest

A young French-Algerian influencer was apprehended on Saturday, June 13, in Morocco after sharing her experiences regarding driving in Marrakech. Known by her online alias Yass Naubelle, she had arrived in Morocco just days prior for a vacation and was set to depart for France when she was detained at Marrakech Airport.

She became a subject of national interest following the release of her video, which led to allegations that she had posted "defamatory content against Moroccan citizens and insulting remarks towards law enforcement," according to reports from various Moroccan media outlets. The authorities cited specific offensive comments directed at Moroccan citizens, as well as explicit accusations of corruption and preferential treatment towards police officers while executing their duties related to traffic laws.

These statements were deemed "criminal acts" and prompted a judicial investigation overseen by the appropriate prosecutors, resulting in a nationwide search notice being issued for her arrest. After her detainment at Marrakech Airport, the 30-year-old influencer was placed in custody to ascertain the real motivations behind her alleged criminal actions.

Controversial Video Content

In the now-deleted video, Yass Naubelle expressed her concerns about Moroccan driving habits, drawing comparisons to Algerians, whom she had previously criticized in another video. She described the situation on the roads as extremely dangerous, remarking, "I am in Marrakech and I have never seen people drive like this. It’s super dangerous, because in addition to cars, there are also mopeds, with no helmets and children…" emphasizing a complete lack of order on the roads.

She clarified, "I am not saying that all of Morocco is like this, but in Marrakech, it’s chaos. And I am not claiming that Algerians drive better, but it’s less worse than here." Furthermore, she condemned the behavior of Moroccan police officers, alleging that they stop and extort money from women without cause, stating, "They look for ways to squeeze money out of us, which they keep for themselves." This commentary has led to significant backlash and her subsequent arrest.
