Celebrating Cultural Unity: The New Headquarters of African Capitals of Culture Opened in Rabat

On June 19, 2026, Rabat, Morocco, witnessed the official inauguration of the permanent headquarters for the African Capitals of Culture, a significant milestone that marks a progressive step in the advancement of this pan-African initiative dedicated to celebrating culture, cities, and creative industries across the continent. This newly established headquarters will serve as the administrative hub for the Permanent Secretariat of the African Capitals of Culture, which will be led by Khalid Tamer. The Secretariat's primary role will be to coordinate the upcoming editions of the program, assist host cities, and strengthen cultural cooperation among African nations.

This inauguration is timely as the program gears up for its next event in 2028, which is set to take place in Cape Verde. A memorandum of understanding was recently signed between the African Capitals of Culture Committee and the Cape Verdean authorities to facilitate the organization of this forthcoming edition. This initiative continues the legacy of the inaugural event held in Rabat during 2022-2023 under the esteemed patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. Over the course of a year, the Moroccan capital hosted a rich cultural program that engaged a variety of institutions, artists, and cultural operators across multiple disciplines.

By establishing this permanent headquarters, Rabat is solidifying its position as a central hub for cultural activities on the continent. The overarching goal is to utilize culture as a means of fostering cooperation, enhancing territorial development, and promoting African creative industries. The African Capitals of Culture Committee has expressed gratitude for the support received from Moroccan authorities, particularly from the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, in facilitating the establishment of this important structure.

Aligned with the African Union's Agenda 2063, the African Capitals of Culture initiative aims to support the cultural development of African cities through impactful projects, artistic mobility, heritage promotion, and the strengthening of creative ecosystems.
