Future Showdown: Yamal's Decision Under Scrutiny
The spotlight is on Lamine Yamal as Spain and Morocco navigate through the group stages of the 2026 World Cup. Fouzi Lekjaa, the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), has already begun to speculate about future matchups, expressing a desire to face the Spanish national team in the finals. This matchup would serve as a litmus test to determine if Yamal made the right choice in opting to represent Spain instead of Morocco, the country of his father's roots.
In an interview with Aljazeera360, Lekjaa reminisced about Morocco's attempts to recruit the Barcelona forward, emphasizing the federation's long-standing efforts to persuade him to wear the colors of the Atlas Lions. “Now I hope we meet Spain in the World Cup final to see if he really made the right decision or not,” Lekjaa stated, adding a touch of irony to his words. He clarified that he respects the player's choice and wishes him well in his international career.
Furthermore, Lekjaa disclosed that the federation had engaged in discussions with Yamal both in Morocco and Spain. He mentioned that they even reached out to Yamal’s family to present the sporting project of the African nation. “We met with his parents. We shared our vision with them, although Lamine was already convinced to go with Spain. We wish him good luck and great success,” Lekjaa explained.
Morocco’s Rising Football Ambition
According to Lekjaa, Morocco has successfully attracted numerous players born in Europe, thanks to the development of its football infrastructure and the emotional ties many players have with their familial homeland. “We are a country that offers the opportunity to regularly compete in African tournaments and participate in World Cups. This international project appeals to players,” he claimed. One notable example is Brahim Díaz, the Real Madrid player who chose to represent Morocco and has become a pivotal offensive asset for the national team.
While the prospect of a final showdown between Spain and Morocco remains a hopeful aspiration, the current standings show Morocco in second place in their group, tied on points with Brazil but trailing due to goal difference. Spain, on the other hand, is seeking its first tournament victory after a 0-0 draw against Cape Verde as they prepare to face Saudi Arabia.
