Marrakech to Host 2026 Workshop on Competitive Bidding for Renewable Energy Projects

Marrakech Welcomes African Nations for Renewable Energy Collaboration

From June 8 to June 12, 2026, Marrakech will serve as the venue for the second in-person workshop of the "Competitive Bidding for Renewable Energy Projects" program, an initiative spearheaded by MASEN in collaboration with various international institutions, including the World Bank, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the French Development Agency (AFD), German Cooperation (GIZ), and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). This significant event will gather representatives from 17 African countries, aiming to enhance the capabilities of public institutions in the design, launch, and management of competitive bidding processes dedicated to the development of renewable energy. This program is part of the Solar Risk Mitigation Initiative (SRMI), which assists countries in accelerating their energy transition.

This second session follows an initial workshop held in Rabat in October 2025 and marks a pivotal moment in the program by consolidating the knowledge gained from virtual training sessions conducted over the past nine months. Participants will be guided in implementing their national action plans, ensuring they are well-equipped to tackle the challenges ahead.

Empowering Nations through Technical Sessions and Practical Learning

The agenda will include technical sessions, collaborative exercises, and experience exchanges focusing on project structuring, bankability, risk allocation, and market awarding mechanisms. The ultimate goal is to enable participating countries to develop renewable energy projects that are attractive to investors and aligned with international best practices. The workshop commenced with a visit to the Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex, one of the largest solar projects globally. This immersive experience provided participants with insights into Morocco's expertise in energy transition and served as a practical example of large-scale clean energy development.

Through this initiative, MASEN reaffirms its commitment to South-South cooperation and to supporting African countries in their energy transition strategies. The nations represented at this edition include Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Comoros, the Central African Republic, Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Chad, Togo, and Tunisia.
