Marsa Maroc Celebrates Arrival of First Large Bulk Carrier at Casablanca Port Following Quay Enhancements

Significant Milestone Achieved at Casablanca Port

Marsa Maroc has marked a pivotal advancement in its operational capabilities by welcoming its inaugural large-capacity bulk carrier at the Port of Casablanca. This noteworthy event follows the completion of the initial phase of extensive quay deepening and rehabilitation efforts aimed at modernizing Morocco's premier port. The vessel in question, a 200-meter sugar bulk carrier chartered by the Cosumar Group, docked with an impressive cargo of nearly 55,000 tonnes of raw sugar. This operation was made feasible by the terminal’s enhanced draft depth of 12 meters, a direct result of the infrastructural upgrades carried out on the quays.

The arrival of this large bulk carrier is not just a first for the Port of Casablanca; it signifies the operational launch of newly upgraded infrastructure designed to accommodate larger vessels. Khalid Mansour, Director of the Bulk Business Unit at Marsa Maroc, expressed enthusiasm about this development, stating, "The Port of Casablanca is now opening its doors to a new category of large bulk carriers." He elaborated that the rehabilitation of 230 meters of quay has successfully increased the depth to 12 meters, enabling the terminal to host ships with capacities nearing 60,000 tons.

Future Plans and Enhancements to Port Operations

Marsa Maroc has outlined ambitious plans to extend the upgraded quay length to 530 meters by the year 2028, which will significantly bolster the terminal’s total handling capacity to over 8 million tons. This expansion not only aims to increase operational efficiency but also seeks to enhance Morocco's position in international trade and logistics. Cosumar, the first beneficiary of these infrastructural improvements, has already started to reap the benefits. Anas Jamal Eddine, the Commercial, Marketing, and Supply Chain Director at Cosumar, noted that the collaboration between Cosumar and Marsa Maroc exemplifies how partnerships between port operators and industrial groups can foster mutual growth and efficiency. He highlighted that the quay deepening, alongside operational enhancements, now allows for the chartering of larger vessels, resulting in significant efficiencies in logistics and port operations that enhance their competitive edge.

The debut of the 55,000-ton sugar carrier serves as a tangible illustration of the enhanced capabilities of Casablanca’s multipurpose terminal and underscores the immediate positive impact of the substantial investments made to modernize Morocco’s port infrastructure.
