Moroccan Court Acquits Former Mayor and Deputy in Money Laundering Case

On Tuesday, the Appeals Chamber for Financial Crimes acquitted both Arab Belkaid and Younes Ben Slimane in the money laundering case following a cassation appeal numbered 2026/2416/2. The court accepted the appeal in form and, on merit, overturned the previous judgment that had convicted Younes Ben Slimane for the charges against him, declaring him and Mohammed Arab Belkaid not guilty, while upholding the initial ruling in its remaining provisions and imposing the costs on the public treasury.

This judicial decision comes after a lengthy judicial process, as the Appeals Chamber had previously upheld the initial ruling on May 30, 2024, in the money laundering file before the case was re-evaluated under the cassation procedure. On January 30, 2026, the Appeals Chamber, which deals with financial crimes at the Marrakesh Court of Appeal, sentenced former Marrakesh Mayor Mohammed Belkaid and his then-deputy and current parliament member Younes Ben Slimane to two years of prison each, along with a collective compensation payment to the Moroccan state amounting to 40 million dirhams.
