Morocco's Strategic Initiative to Enhance African Air Connectivity
Morocco is making significant strides in the African air market by launching four new flight routes aimed at bolstering regional connectivity. This initiative is part of the Kingdom's overarching strategy to strengthen the Casablanca hub's position and facilitate economic integration across the continent. By enhancing commercial exchanges, promoting traveler mobility, and developing air freight services, Morocco is taking a crucial step toward realizing the African Single Air Transport Market. This strategic effort comes at a time when Africa, home to nearly 18% of the world’s population, captures only a small fraction of international air traffic, underscoring the importance of improving air transport as a driver of economic development.
Investments in Infrastructure and Fleet Expansion
During the AFCAC Expo 2026 held in Lomé on June 16, 2026, Moroccan Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh reiterated the nation's ambition to become a pivotal player in enhancing air connectivity within Africa. He emphasized the ongoing investments in Moroccan airport infrastructure, which are critical for reinforcing Casablanca's status as a major air transit hub. Currently, Morocco operates regular flights to 32 African capitals, positioning Casablanca as a key gateway to the continent. Moreover, the national airline, Royal Air Maroc, is embarking on an extensive expansion plan, aiming to grow its fleet to nearly 200 aircraft by 2037, up from the current 70. This expansion is poised to accommodate up to 31 million passengers annually while further extending its African and international network. The Moroccan government believes that opening African skies and developing air freight capabilities are essential tools for supporting the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and accelerating the continent's economic integration.
