Morocco Gaming Expo: Catalyzing the Nation's Video Game Industry

Transforming Morocco's Gaming Landscape

Since its inception in 2024, the Morocco Gaming Expo (MGE) has swiftly positioned itself as a pivotal event in showcasing the country's gaming strategy. Designed to serve as a catalyst, this expo underlines Morocco's ambitious goals of establishing a vibrant local gaming industry and securing a significant presence on the global stage of video gaming. The inaugural edition, held from May 24 to 26, 2024, in Rabat, marked a significant milestone as it became the first trade show of its kind in Morocco, facilitating connections between local gaming industry stakeholders and international players. This initial gathering attracted over 41,000 visitors, including 30 investors, 120 speakers, and 70 exhibitors, with renowned Japanese designer Takaya Imamura, a former art designer at Nintendo, gracing the event as the guest of honor.

Building Momentum for Future Editions

Fast forward to the second edition, which took place from July 2 to 6, 2025, and the expo's growing success was apparent. Mohammed Mehdi Bensaid, the Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, articulated a clear vision: Morocco aims to capture 1% of the global video game economy by 2033, a market projected to reach $500 billion. Emphasizing the significance of the gaming industry in the global economy, Bensaid highlighted Morocco's commitment to fostering this sector to benefit startups and individuals alike, thus tapping into the global momentum surrounding gaming. The second edition boasted impressive figures, welcoming over 70,000 visitors, 30 investors, 200 speakers, and 100 exhibitors from 18 different countries, with celebrated video game creator Yoshiki Okamoto as the guest of honor.

With the third edition set to take place from May 20 to 24, 2026, at the Sofitel Jardin des Roses in Rabat, the expo aims to further enhance Morocco's status as a regional and continental gaming hub. The upcoming event promises an enriched program featuring conferences, panels, masterclasses, and workshops led by both Moroccan and international experts, covering critical themes such as innovation and business models within the gaming sector. Notably, Erin Roberts, a veteran video game producer with over 35 years of experience in developing AAA titles, will be the guest of honor.

The Morocco Gaming Expo not only serves as a platform for showcasing the diversity of the gaming ecosystem in Morocco but also facilitates interactions among developers, publishers, investors, and startups. By introducing new themed zones like MGE PlayTest and MGE Talks, the expo aims to highlight Moroccan talent and expertise in video game development. Additionally, the event will host several forums addressing public policies, national strategies, and international partnerships, enabling essential discussions on innovation and business opportunities in the industry. The expo will also include e-sports tournaments, inviting a broader audience to engage with the gaming community.

Ultimately, the Morocco Gaming Expo plays a crucial role in nurturing talent and fostering collaboration among educational institutions, training centers, startups, and investors, positioning itself as an essential lever for the country's burgeoning gaming ecosystem. The expo not only enhances visibility for brands and telecom operators but also stimulates B2B interactions essential for collaboration across the industry. As it continues to attract professionals and foreign companies, the MGE strengthens Morocco's appeal as an African hub for the gaming industry, akin to other major technology events. However, the critical question remains: does the MGE genuinely accelerate the industrial transformation of the sector? The answer is a resounding yes, as the expo transcends the confines of a mere event, acting as a catalyst for tangible results, including the establishment of studios, job creation, and the development of a structured local production landscape.
