Palazzo Xara: A Cultural Gem in Rabat
The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) is set to enhance the historic Palazzo Xara, situated in the vibrant heart of Rabat, through a dedicated funding initiative aimed at further restoration efforts. Acquired seventy-five years ago by the Għaqda Mużikali L’Isle Adam, this magnificent palazzo has served as the society’s band club, fostering musical talent and cultural activities within the community. Over the years, a devoted team of volunteers has tirelessly worked to preserve the building, undertaking a myriad of projects to ensure its upkeep and artistic enrichment.
With the MTA's financial support, restoration efforts will focus particularly on the façade that overlooks the terrace, in addition to a decorative turret that adds to the building's charm. The history of Palazzo Xara under the stewardship of the Għaqda Mużikali L’Isle Adam reflects a continuous commitment from various committees and members to maintain and enhance this cultural landmark. The upper floor, known as the piano nobile, showcases an impressive collection of artworks and serves as the venue for band rehearsals, committee meetings, and community events, including the renowned Red Room.
Commitment to Preservation and Future Projects
According to Neville Muscat, the president of the society, there has been a longstanding tradition of maintaining the palazzo, with new additions enhancing its functionality. In recent years, the focus has shifted toward extensive restoration projects, notably the façade, balcony, and interior artwork, including the ceilings. With the MTA’s collaboration, future plans are in motion to continue the restoration of the terrace area, which is envisioned as a vibrant space for concerts, cultural events, and community initiatives that will engage both locals and visitors alike.
Carlo Micallef, Chief Executive of the Malta Tourism Authority, elaborated on the importance of this funding, emphasizing that modern tourism thrives on experiences rooted in cultural heritage. Tourists today seek to immerse themselves in the rich history of their destinations, and Malta’s diverse cultural sites offer a unique glimpse into its storied past. This investment in Palazzo Xara comes at a pivotal moment as the Għaqda Mużikali L’Isle Adam celebrates 75 years since acquiring the building, marking the occasion with a concert under the auspices of the President of Malta and preparing for a historical publication about the palazzo.
For the L’Isle Adam Society, Palazzo Xara is not merely a building; it is a hub for musical education, nurturing aspiring musicians who will soon grace the stage at the annual Imnarja concert in Saqqajja Square and participate in various traditional Maltese celebrations across the islands.
