Struggling for Stability: A 31-Year-Old Hotel Worker Lives on the Streets in Italy
Youssef, a 31-year-old Moroccan, finds himself in a dire situation where he works diligently as a hotel cleaner in the heart of Bolzano, Italy, yet he is unable to afford a roof over his head. Despite his employment, the harsh reality of life on the streets has become his daily existence, as his wages are insufficient to cover rent and support his family back home. "I always hope that something will change tomorrow, but nothing ever does. I am tired," he expressed in a poignant interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere Alto Adige.
Youssef's journey began a decade ago when he left his family in Morocco in search of better opportunities. His travels have taken him across various European countries, including Spain, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, France, and the Netherlands. In 2020, he settled in Italy, and since February 2026, he has been residing in South Tyrol, where he continues to grapple with the challenges of homelessness despite having a formal employment contract.
Living in front of a supermarket, Youssef's story highlights the struggles faced by many individuals in similar circumstances, who, despite their hard work and determination, find themselves trapped in a cycle of poverty. His hope for a brighter future remains unyielding, even as he confronts the daily realities of life on the streets. This situation raises critical questions about the adequacy of support systems for workers in precarious employment and the need for comprehensive solutions to address homelessness in urban settings.
