Details of the Tragedy
In a heartbreaking incident that unfolded on June 19, 2026, two Moroccan teenagers tragically drowned at Arrabassada beach in Tarragona, northeastern Spain. The boys, aged 12 and 13, were part of a group of six swimming in a rocky area when they encountered dangerous conditions. Despite a yellow warning flag signaling rough seas, the group ventured into the water, leading to a dire situation where three of the boys became trapped. Emergency services quickly mobilized, launching a significant rescue operation involving lifeguards, medical teams, firefighters, police, and maritime rescue units. Unfortunately, one boy was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two succumbed to their injuries in the following days after being hospitalized in critical condition.
Community Response and Repatriation
The tragic loss prompted local authorities in Tarragona to observe three days of mourning, reflecting the community’s grief over the incident. On Sunday, a solemn gathering took place, attended by around 300 individuals, including prominent figures such as the president of the Catalan regional government, Salvador Illa, and the mayor of Tarragona, Rubén Viñuales, who led a minute of silence to honor the victims. The Moroccan Consul in Tarragona, Ikram Chahine, confirmed that one of the deceased was a Moroccan national, while the other was of Moroccan descent holding Spanish citizenship. The families of both victims have made arrangements for repatriation, with the Moroccan national being covered by insurance that includes costs for his return to Morocco, while the family of the second victim successfully raised the necessary funds for his burial in his ancestral homeland.
