Tribute to Lehbib Mohamed Abdelaziz: A Committed Leader and Martyr

National Mourning Declared for Heroic Martyr

In a poignant announcement, the Presidency of the Republic has instituted three days of national mourning beginning at 8:00 p.m. local time on Sunday, following the tragic death of Lehbib Mohamed Abdelaziz, a prominent member of the National Secretariat of the Polisario Front and commander of the First Reserve Brigade. Abdelaziz was killed in combat alongside two of his fellow fighters during an operation against the Moroccan defensive wall on June 7, 2026, marking a significant loss for the Polisario Front, which mourns the passing of one of its youngest and most dedicated political and military figures.

A Legacy of Service and Leadership

Lehbib Mohamed Abdelaziz was born in 1989 in the “Camps of Dignity,” where he completed his primary education and memorized the Quran. His pursuit of knowledge led him to Algeria, where he studied international relations, ultimately earning a university degree. In November 2011, shortly after his graduation, he joined the Sahrawi People's Liberation Army (SPLA), beginning a distinguished military career marked by commitment and valor. He completed special forces training in 2012, followed by command and staff training between 2017 and 2018, where he honed his leadership skills.

Throughout his service, Abdelaziz held various significant roles, including platoon leader and battalion commander, along with key positions in military administration such as Director of General Administration at the Ministry of National Defence and a member of the General Staff. His leadership acumen was recognized in 2024 when he was appointed commander of the First Reserve Brigade and elected as a member of the National Secretariat during the 16th Congress of the Polisario Front.

Colleagues and subordinates praised his disciplined approach and unwavering dedication, noting that he led with responsibility and humility, shunning the pursuit of personal glory in favor of genuine connections with his soldiers. Lehbib Mohamed Abdelaziz leaves behind a legacy of honor and duty, remembered fondly by those who served under him. He is survived by his wife and three children, two daughters and a son, who will continue to remember him as a devoted family man.
