Significant Milestone for Casablanca Port
The Port of Casablanca has recently marked a significant achievement with the arrival of its first large-capacity vessel, a bulk sugar carrier measuring 200 meters in length and chartered by the Cosumar Group. This vessel, capable of transporting nearly 55,000 tonnes of raw sugar, docked at the newly enhanced Marsa Maroc multipurpose terminal, showcasing the terminal's recent upgrades following the completion of the first phase of its deepening project.
The successful docking was made possible by the terminal's new draft of 12 meters, allowing it to accommodate larger ships and handle operations under optimal conditions. This event not only signifies the terminal's capacity to manage larger vessels but also highlights the initial tangible benefits of the ongoing deepening project at the Casablanca port.
Enhanced Capacity and Future Prospects
Khalid Mansour, the Business Unit Director for Bulk at Marsa Maroc, expressed enthusiasm about this development, stating, "We are witnessing the opening of the Port of Casablanca to a new range of large-capacity bulk carrier arrivals. With 230 linear meters of quays now rehabilitated and deepened to -12 meters, the terminal can accommodate vessels with capacities nearing 60,000 tonnes. Our goal is to expand this linear capacity to 530 meters by 2028, thus equipping the terminal with a total capacity exceeding 8 million tonnes." This expansion is poised to enhance the port's role in the maritime trade landscape significantly.
On the other side, Anas Jamal Eddine, the Commercial, Marketing, and Supply Chain Director at Cosumar, emphasized the importance of collaboration between Cosumar and Marsa Maroc. He described their partnership as a perfect illustration of what a port-industry operator collaboration should embody: a lever for mutual growth. He noted that the operational improvements made in tandem with the quay deepening works empower Cosumar to charter larger vessels, resulting in significant port and logistical optimizations that enhance the company's competitiveness.
