Successful First Test for Casablanca's New Multi-Purpose Terminal Docks

Marsa Maroc Achieves Milestone with New Docking Facilities

In a significant development for maritime operations, Marsa Maroc has successfully welcomed its first large-capacity vessel at the newly rehabilitated multi-purpose terminal in the Port of Casablanca. This inaugural docking involved a bulk sugar carrier chartered by the Cosumar Group, boasting a capacity of approximately 55,000 tons. The arrival of this vessel marks a pivotal moment for the port, facilitated by an extensive project aimed at deepening the terminal's docks to a depth of -12 meters, thus enhancing its operational capabilities.

The successful docking of the 200-meter bulk carrier at the modernized terminal represents a major leap forward in the port's operational excellence. The newly established water depth allows for the efficient handling of larger vessels, thereby illustrating the tangible benefits of the terminal's enhancement project. Khalid Mansour, Director of the Bulk Unit at Marsa Maroc, emphasized this achievement, stating, “We are witnessing the opening of the Port of Casablanca to a new range of large-capacity bulk carriers. With 230 linear meters of dock now rehabilitated and deepened to -12 meters, the terminal is equipped to accommodate vessels with capacities nearing 60,000 tons. Our goal is to extend this linear capacity to 530 meters by 2028, ultimately enabling the terminal to handle over 8 million tons annually.”

Furthermore, Anas Jamal Eddine, the Commercial, Marketing, and Supply Chain Director for the Cosumar Group, highlighted the importance of collaboration between the two entities. He remarked, “The partnership between Cosumar and Marsa Maroc exemplifies what a port-industry operator collaboration should be: a lever for mutual growth. Combined with operational improvement initiatives undertaken jointly, the dock enhancement works enable Cosumar to charter larger vessels, generating significant port and logistical optimizations that enhance our competitiveness.” This successful trial run not only underscores the port's modernization efforts but also sets a precedent for future operations, affirming Casablanca's position as a key player in maritime trade.
