Potential New Investment for Hertha BSC
Hertha BSC, a football club currently competing in the second division of German football, is reportedly in discussions regarding the prospect of a new investor. According to information from the German news outlet "Bild", Phil Murphy, a prominent figure with connections to both the club and the city of Berlin, has shown interest in acquiring a stake in the financially struggling team. Despite the buzz surrounding these developments, the club has opted not to comment on the matter at this stage.
Initial talks are believed to have already taken place between Murphy and Ralf Thaeter, a member of Hertha's presidential board. Murphy, who served as the United States Ambassador to Germany from 2009 to 2013, has maintained a strong affinity for the club. Notably, he held the position of Governor of New Jersey until January 2026, further solidifying his profile as a significant investor in sports.
In addition to his political background, Murphy is recognized as the founder and principal owner of Gotham FC, a U.S. women's soccer team. Reports indicate that he has engaged in discussions with A-Cap, the company that currently holds approximately 79% of the shares in Hertha KGaA. A-Cap acquired these shares from the previous investor, 777 Partners, which had purchased them from Lars Windhorst in 2023, following an investment of around 374 million euros by Windhorst.
