Moroccan Lawyers Stand Firm Against Legislation Contradicting Professional Standards

Moroccan Lawyers Reject Legislation that Contravenes Professional Ethics

The Moroccan Bar Association has firmly declared that any proposed legislation, particularly the current draft law on the legal profession, which contradicts established legal customs and universal principles of the profession, will not be accepted by Moroccan lawyers. The association has expressed its readiness to engage in an unprecedented and ongoing struggle until their objectives are achieved. In a statement, the Bar Association emphasized the necessity for increased mobilization and vigilance within the legal community, indicating their commitment to collaborate with general assemblies of lawyers and the conference of bar leaders to formulate new action plans while maintaining continuous meetings of its executive committee to monitor developments in this crucial matter.

Furthermore, the statement reiterated the bar leaders' commitment to resignations previously announced, describing this stance as a principled and responsible protest reflecting the deep concern regarding what they termed "systematic and multifaceted attacks" targeting the legal profession and its institutions. The Bar Association believes that the ongoing discussions surrounding the draft law have transcended mere legislative and professional regulatory boundaries, evolving into an affront to the symbolism of the legal profession and its historical roles in defending rights, freedoms, and the rule of law. They assert that the legislative moment has shifted from being a platform for institutional dialogue to an opportunity to undermine the profession's stature.

According to the Bar Association, any legislative approach that fails to reflect the true message, history, and institutions of the legal profession, and does not serve the interests of justice and its stakeholders, cannot provide an acceptable foundation for the future organization of the profession.
