Trial Delay for Political Figure Abdellah Hamidi
On Monday, May 25, 2026, the Court of Appeal in Fes announced the postponement of the trial for Abdellah Hamidi, a prominent member of the Justice and Development Party. This decision comes as Hamidi faces renewed legal scrutiny concerning the death of leftist student Mohamed Ait Jid, also known as "Beni Issa." The court has rescheduled the next hearing for October 15, 2026.
Previously, in July 2023, a primary court had sentenced Hamidi to three years in prison concerning the same case. The events leading to this trial date back to 1993, when Ait Jid, a university student, was killed during clashes between student factions at the University of Fes. Although Hamidi was acquitted of murder charges previously, the court ruled that he had contributed to a fight that resulted in the fatal incident.
In July 2017, the family of the deceased student lodged a new complaint, prompting an investigative judge to reopen the case, leading to the current trial against Hamidi.
