Rafael Unveils SIGMA: A Cutting-Edge SIGINT System for Comprehensive Electromagnetic Surveillance

Introduction to SIGMA

The Israeli defense technology company Rafael has made a significant advancement in signal intelligence (SIGINT) with the introduction of SIGMA, a sophisticated system designed to continuously monitor the electromagnetic spectrum. This innovative system excels at identifying and localizing transmitters across land, air, and maritime domains, providing commanders with real-time electronic order of battle (EOB) information. The SIGMA system is a game changer for military operations, enabling a deeper understanding of the electromagnetic environment.

Key Features and Capabilities

SIGMA integrates compact and distributed sensors that can be deployed at fixed sites as well as on aerial, ground, and maritime platforms. These sensors work in conjunction with a central processing facility that transforms raw signal data into actionable intelligence. One of the remarkable aspects of SIGMA is its passive operation, which involves no detectable emissions, allowing for uninterrupted 24/7 surveillance over extensive geographic areas and frequency ranges.

The core functionalities of SIGMA include the near-real-time detection, classification, identification, and geolocation of transmitters, alongside the processing of communications intelligence (COMINT) data. The system also facilitates the fusion of sensor data from both Rafael and third-party sources, including radar data, and enables the analysis of historical trends. Furthermore, SIGMA offers optional integration of effectors that allow for real-time operational responses aligned with customer directives.

According to Rafael, SIGMA is modular, scalable, and platform-agnostic, ensuring seamless integration into existing military structures without significant additional effort. This adaptability is crucial for modern armed forces seeking to enhance their operational capabilities.

Guy Oren, Vice President and Head of the Intelligence & C4I Division at Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, emphasized the strategic advantage of early and comprehensive understanding of the electromagnetic environment: "The armed forces that first and most comprehensively understand the electromagnetic environment with the least blind spots will seize the initiative." He further noted that SIGMA addresses long-standing gaps in SIGINT architectures, presenting a mature and deployable system designed for integration into the platforms and military structures already in use by their clients.

Israeli sources have informed Defence Network that the SIGMA system has been combat-tested, underscoring its reliability and effectiveness in real-world scenarios.
