Ryanair Dominates Air Travel Between Morocco and Spain

Ryanair Leads the Moroccan-Spanish Air Market

In the competitive air travel sector between Morocco and Spain, Ryanair has established a remarkable lead. According to Turespaña's 2025 report on the Moroccan tourism market, the Irish airline accounted for a staggering 58% of the passengers transported in 2024 on direct flights between the two nations. This substantial market share signifies Ryanair's dominance, surpassing all other airlines operating on this route. In comparison, Air Arabia trails significantly with just 13% of the market, followed closely by Royal Air Maroc at 12%, Iberia-Air Nostrum capturing 11%, Vueling at 5%, and Binter Canarias with a mere 1%.

This dominance is set against the backdrop of a robust recovery in air traffic between Morocco and Spain. In 2024, the total number of available seats from Morocco to Spain reached 2.47 million, marking a 10% increase year-on-year. Nearly 1.95 million passengers were actually flown, reflecting a growth of 13.1%, with a total of 15,199 flights recorded during the year.

Expansion and Strategic Positioning of Ryanair

Ryanair has further solidified its presence by launching new routes. In 2024, the airline opened new connections including Barcelona-Tangier and Murcia-Marrakech. The report also highlights the anticipated launch of the Madrid-Dakhla and Lanzarote-Dakhla routes in January 2025, enhancing Morocco's visibility within the Spanish low-cost travel network. This strategic approach allows Ryanair to cater to various travel segments, including tourism, family visits, short getaways, and essential links for Moroccan expatriates residing in Spain. The airline capitalizes on the strong demand for travel between major Moroccan cities and regions in Spain that host significant Moroccan communities.

Madrid remains the primary air hub in Spain for passengers coming from Morocco, accounting for 32.5% of traffic from ten Moroccan cities such as Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Tangier, Fes, Nador, Tetouan, and Agadir. Catalonia captures 27.5% of the traffic, while Andalusia represents 18.4%. The trend is expected to accelerate during the summer of 2025, with AENA's forecasts, cited by Turespaña, predicting 1.89 million available seats between July and October 2025, a staggering 65.3% increase compared to the previous year. Most of this capacity will be concentrated in Madrid, Catalonia, and Andalusia.

In stark contrast, Royal Air Maroc, the national airline of Morocco, retains a significant position on the Morocco-Spain route but remains far behind Ryanair in passenger numbers. With only 12% market share, it is nearly on par with Air Arabia and Iberia-Air Nostrum but still lags considerably behind the leading Irish airline. This overwhelming presence of Ryanair illustrates how low-cost carriers are reshaping travel dynamics between Morocco and Spain, offering Moroccan travelers a denser, often more accessible range of options that cover an increasing number of cities. For other airlines, the competition is fierce against a player that has already established a significant lead.
