United Nations Honors Fallen Moroccan Peacekeepers with Dag Hammarskjöld Medal

Tribute to the Sacrifice of Moroccan Peacekeepers

On Friday, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres paid tribute to the dedication and sacrifice of three Moroccan peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving in various U.N. missions across Africa. This solemn recognition underscores their invaluable contribution to international peace and security, as reported by Morocco’s Press Agency. The ceremony was part of the U.N.'s annual event that honors military, police, and civilian personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice in peacekeeping operations.

During this heartfelt ceremony, the three fallen members of Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces were awarded the prestigious Dag Hammarskjöld Medal, a significant accolade that acknowledges their commitment to promoting peace in some of the world’s most challenging environments. The medals were graciously presented to Morocco’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, who accepted them on behalf of the deceased peacekeepers.

Morocco's Commitment to Peacekeeping Missions

Among the honored peacekeepers, two were serving in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), while the third was deployed with the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO). During his address at the ceremony, Hilale expressed his deep condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, acknowledging their profound sacrifice in upholding the core principles and values of the United Nations.

Morocco's commitment to global peacekeeping is exemplified by its current deployment of 1,714 uniformed personnel to both MINUSCA and MONUSCO, positioning the nation among the top ten troop-contributing countries to the United Nations. The ceremony also served to honor the broader peacekeeping community, highlighting the immense sacrifices made since 1948, with nearly 4,500 peacekeepers having lost their lives under the U.N. banner, including 59 military, police, and civilian personnel in the year 2025 alone.
