Eighth Grader Launches Axe Attack on Classmate During Class

On May 25, the Gia Lai People's Committee announced that an investigation had been initiated regarding a shocking incident at Nguyen Van Khu Secondary School in Thong Nhat District, where a student attacked a classmate with an axe, resulting in injuries. The incident occurred around 1 PM on May 21 during a technical class for eighth graders. As the teacher was preparing to connect a computer to a television screen to commence the lesson, NHN, a student from the eighth grade, unexpectedly produced an axe concealed in a black plastic bag and attacked his classmate, H.D.UL, who was seated in front of him. This violent act led to L. sustaining head injuries, necessitating immediate hospitalization for emergency care.

The attack transpired rapidly, witnessed by both the teacher and fellow students, causing widespread panic within the classroom. The subject teacher quickly intervened to disarm NHN and coordinated with the school administration to transport H.D.UL to 331 Hospital in Gia Lai Province for urgent medical attention. Initial reports indicated that L. was diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage, prompting the family to transfer him to Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for further treatment.

Following the violent incident, the Thong Nhat District People's Committee directed the Department of Culture and Social Affairs to work in conjunction with local police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the event. Students from NHN's class were taken to the police station, and their families were notified for cooperation in clarifying the details of the incident. Authorities also interviewed the class teacher, subject teachers, and students from both the eighth and fifth grades to assist in the investigation.

According to an investigation conducted by Thanh Nien newspaper, the primary cause of this incident stemmed from a prior dispute between the two students involved. This is not an isolated case; in April 2025, a similar incident occurred at Nguyen Van Khu Secondary School, where a ninth-grade student used a knife to harm a classmate.

Upon receiving reports of the axe attack, the Gia Lai People's Committee issued a directive to the relevant authorities to conduct an urgent investigation into the incident and clarify the circumstances surrounding it. Concurrently, the committee requested the principal of Nguyen Van Khu Secondary School to enhance student management and supervision, raise awareness among students, and implement proactive measures to prevent weapons from being brought to school.
