Promoting Human Dignity: A Call to Action from Amr Moussa

Amr Moussa Advocates for Global Human Dignity at Fes Summit

Amr Moussa, the former Secretary-General of the Arab League, emphasized the incomplete nature of discussions surrounding human dignity if they do not encompass populations suffering from occupation, oppression, and violations of fundamental rights. During his address at the Fes Summit on Human Dignity in Morocco, he asserted that the dignity of the Palestinian people is an integral part of universal human dignity. Moussa highlighted that occupation, oppression, murder, destruction, land confiscation, and the degradation of the Palestinian people all represent gross violations of human dignity and international law. He stressed that respecting human dignity necessitates defending the rights, freedoms, and the right to live in safety, peace, and dignity of all peoples.

Moussa further stated that the defense of human dignity must not be subjected to double standards or selective political considerations. He insisted that humanitarian values remain singular and indivisible, regardless of geographical differences or power dynamics. The credibility of the international system, he noted, is measured by its ability to uphold human dignity everywhere without exception and to adhere to international legal standards, free from double standards.

Returning to Cairo today after his visit to Morocco, Moussa participated in the Fes Summit on Human Dignity, which took place on June 13-14 in the historic city of Fes. The summit featured an elite gathering of former heads of state, diplomats, thinkers, and decision-makers from around the globe. Moussa was part of a delegation from the International Nizami Ganjavi Center in Azerbaijan, alongside Dr. Ismail Serageldin, co-chair of the center and former director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and former Mauritian President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, among other prominent international figures.

The summit also witnessed the presence of numerous current and former ministers and officials from Morocco, Arab countries, Europe, and the United States, including Egypt's Ambassador to Morocco Ahmed Nihad Abdel-Latif and Jordan's Ambassador to Morocco Jumanah Ghnimat, along with ambassadors from Turkey and Azerbaijan, as well as senior diplomats from Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives from various international organizations and esteemed research centers.

Convened by Dr. Hakima El Haite, former Minister of the Environment in Morocco and President of the "Dignity" Summit, the event operated under the theme "Unleashing the Driving Force of Human Dignity". The goal was to reinforce the concept of human dignity as a fundamental basis for dialogue among civilizations and to promote peace, coexistence, and international cooperation. The summit also explored ideas surrounding cultural diplomacy, ethical governance, and the role of heritage and culture in building peace and preventing conflicts.

A series of high-level sessions and discussions took place at the summit, focusing on the role of culture, diplomacy, and inter-civilizational dialogue in addressing current international challenges. The summit concluded with the announcement of the "Fes Declaration on Human Dignity", aimed at establishing human dignity as a moral reference in international relations and multilateral action.

Fes, with its rich cultural heritage and long history of coexistence among various cultures and religions, serves as a symbolic location for launching this international initiative, which aims to enhance dialogue, integration, and understanding among peoples and civilizations while elevating the values of human dignity and mutual respect.
