International Sports Journalists' Golf Cup Wraps Up in Agadir

International Collaboration and Recognition at the Sports Journalists’ Golf Cup

The vibrant city of Agadir recently concluded the ninth iteration of the Sports Journalists’ Golf Cup, a prestigious event that took place from May 21 to May 23, 2026. Organized by the Agadir branch of the Moroccan League of Sports Journalists, the tournament was themed "Open and Committed Media… Sport as a Lever for Tourism Development," highlighting the essential role of sports journalism in promoting tourism and fostering international relationships.

This year's event attracted a diverse group of participants, including journalists and media professionals from Morocco, France, and Spain, showcasing its international appeal. The competition culminated in a thrilling finale where Spanish journalist Jose Merquez emerged victorious, followed closely by Said Lamrati, the media officer for Moghreb Atlético Tetuán. Ilyas El Battahi from Le360 completed the podium, finishing in third place.

In addition to the golfing competition, the event featured a photography contest that recognized outstanding sports photography. Photojournalist Issa Saouri from Le Matin took home the first prize, while Salma Sghir from Podium Sport and Mohamed Aftahi from Al Bayane claimed the second and third spots, respectively.

The awards ceremony held at a local hotel celebrated not only the winners but also honored various athletes, media figures, and representatives from the tourism and civil society sectors who have made significant contributions to Moroccan sports on both national and international stages. This initiative reflects a broader national effort to cultivate a culture of appreciation and recognition for those dedicated to advancing Moroccan sports, despite the challenges that persist.

The ninth edition of the Golf Cup served as a vital platform for enhancing communication and collaboration between Moroccan sports media and their global counterparts. Moreover, it promoted golf as a historic sport featured in the Summer Olympic Games, reinforcing Agadir's reputation as a hub for sports and tourism.
